Implicit Bias Policing
Implicit Bias Policing is the "unconscious act of discriminatory treatment of a person, which includes race, color, age, sex, gender, nationality, disability, and religion." This bias is very common in the police force.Implicit bias is broken down into 2 systems. System 1 is the automatic intuition obtained from heuristics and System 2 is the product of reflection. It is important to fix this type of bias because if we don't, it can and will be hurtful to people in our society. Minorities just want to be treated the way white people are treated. How do we fix this?
- Increase understanding of what implicit bias is and self-evaluating your thought process
- Put more policies to reduce the impact of bias
Gender Bias Policing
Gender Bias Policing is a "term used to take law enforcement practices that are deep in gender stereotypes, has discrimination impact on women, and expose harassment and violence to women and LGBTQ+ people by police officers." An example of this would be the failure to test sexual assault kits on time.Domestic Violence is the biggest category of police calls. 2 surveys had been conducted in 2016 that say that only 83% had reported that police do not take sexual assault seriously and that only 33% of victims felt unsafe after calling the police. It is important to fix this bias because if we don't, it stops victims of domestic violence and sexual assault from coming to the police and reporting. We want them to report, so we can put the suspects in prison. How do we fix this?
- Update the policies that oversee domestic violence and sexual assault crimes
- Provide more training on how to handle those types of situations
- Make sure that Police Officers are taking it seriously and if they don't, then suspend them and make them take seminars/classes
Race Bias Policing
Race Bias Policing is another word for racial profiling, essentially. Black people are more likely to be arrested than white people. One fact is that white Democrats and white Republicans have hugely different views on how Black people are treated by police officers, which is about 88% of white Democrats saying that Black people are treated unfairly by police officers. Another fact is that "Around 86% of police officers had said that high-profile fatal encounters between Black people and police officers had made their jobs harder."How do we fix this?
- Provide more training about racial profiling/race bias policing
- Make sure police officers and taking it seriously and that if they get caught racial profiling then they get punished by getting suspended
